How to Prevent Contact Dermatitis | Wear Makeup Freely

Hey Fam! Welcome to another blog post. Contact Dermatitis, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, is a type of eczema that occurs when the skin breaks out into a rash after coming into contact with an irritant. Some rashes occur immediately. Most take time to appear.

There are different types of irritants such as soaps, cosmetics, fragrances, metals (jewellery), plants (poison ivy) and some people are exposed to substances at work. The one that affects me the most is cosmetics, specifically makeup. I do not wear it often but I like to change it up for special occasions. So I had to find a way to prevent contact dermatitis. The rash occurred regardless of which brands I tried. I have used makeup brands like Black Opal, Revlon and other generic brands.

The number one way to prevent contact dermatitis relating to cosmetics is to avoid irritants and allergens. It is essential to try to identify and avoid substances that irritate your skin or cause an allergic reaction. You can also wash your skin frequently, apply a barrier cream or gel or use a moisturizer.

The best method for me is to use a barrier gel. Why? Because I am not going to avoid makeup. There are always healthy options and I have found a way for it to work.  I use Aloe Vera gel. Check out this video on how I essentially use Aloe Vera gel as a primer and then apply moisturizer on top, followed by my normal makeup application process.
